E60: Inspiration In The Slums of Mumbai
Each summer the team at MTT runs a series of junior camps in conjunction with Nike in Pebble Beach, California. These programs represent an opportunity for junior golfers from across the globe to hone their skills while playing some of the world’s finest courses. Attendees get all the coaching they can handle, while playing the likes of Poppy Hills, Spyglass, Del Monte and Spanish Bay. A line-up that often makes mom and dad wish it was them enjoying a golf vacation with the kids waiting back at home.
The program is comprised of the technical, physical and emotional elements associated with playing the game, as well a fair share of good “fun” you’d expect from a week of teeing it up and making new friends on the California coast.
Amidst the good times, we as coaches realize there’s also the opportunity to facilitate perhaps a life-changing impact in the form of inspiration. Each week we present to the kids a discussion on “mental toughness” or the attitudes associated with finding success both on and off the golf course. To kick off the session our team selects a short video that depicts some type of journey that embodies the spirit of perseverance and achievement. One of our favorite stories is this segment produced by ESPN and their E:60 program on golf in the slums of Mumbai.
There are so many amazing elements to this story. A few that we enjoy are the propensity to dream big, seeing opportunity in any situation and choosing not to live with a victim’s mentality amidst even the most difficult of circumstances. We hope you enjoy this story as much as we did!
